Having made to measure voile curtains

If you have curtains on your window, but would still like a little more privacy while the curtains are open, or if you don’t like curtains but would still like to obscure the window then voile curtains may be just the thing for you. Voile is like a traditional net curtains but is delicate and hangs softly giving a more luxurious finish.

Until recently it was only possible to buy voile as a fabric or as ready made panels. These were normally 60″width. In order to cover a window multiple panels would be required (enough to make up a double gather). Now however made to measure voile curtains mean that a voile can be made exactly to your window size in one single piece with no need for joins. The voile can then be hung through channel at the top onto either a net wire, a cafe rod or a small pole.

These voile curtains are an attractive way to finish a window.

Dressing bay windows

We are often asked how to curtain a bay window. In reality you can use any of the standard curtains types, pencil pleat, pinch pleat, ring top and tab top. The problem is more about the track or pole that you use to hang the curtains. There are a few options available the first and more expensive option is to get a metal track or pole made to the size and shape of the bay. This would involve a track fitter taking a template of the bay and the track will come shaped and ready to fit. The cheaper option is to use a plastic track and bend it by hand to the shape of the bay. With ring top and tab top curtains the will only fit on a pole so the custom pole option is the only available.

Ready made curtains although fine to fit in bays do only come in limited widths the largest being 90″. So often the curtains will need to be made to measure curtains.

Blackout linings

Choosing which lining to use when making your curtains will effect the finish of your completed curtains. Blackout lining is a cotton lining with a rubber sprayed onto one side. If the fabric is sprayed once it is called thermal lining. It is sprayed twice then the lining is blackout thermal. If it is sprayed three times then the lining is a 3 pass or total blackout. We currently have our three pass blackout on sale at £3.59 per metre.

Cotton sateen lining is a curtain lining that is 100% cotton and the sateen mean it has been dressed to keep the lining sharp and also protect the lining and curtains against fading caused by sunlight.

The last a basic form of curtain lining is polycotton lining.

If you need to calculate how many metre of fabric you need for a window size. There is a wonderful little fabric calculator tool here which you enter your sizes and the fabric width, price and pattern repeat and it will tell you what you need for pinch pleat, pencil pleat and ring top curtains.

Net pleat curtain tape

Dual purpose net pleat heading tape. Often when customers are enquiring about having voile or net panels made up we would ask if they would like a standard slot top or a pencil pleat net tape and often they would not have heard of the tape.

The really good thing about this 2″ translucent tape is that after having it sewn onto your voile or organza you are able to feed a net wire behind as it creates a pocket or you can hang this with curtain hook on a track like a traditional pencil pleat curtain as the tape has hook pockets for the clips. Having this extra option is really handy for draping your panel and making it look pretty on a standard curtain track.
